As I sit at my desk in Florida I pause to think how quick the summer really goes by. You can ask any staff member around week 2 that the summer seems like it will go on forever and then poof, it’s over. There is a phrase that we use in orientation that sums it up best, “the days are long and the weeks are short”. They never get it when you tell them that but when they step foot on that bus to head to Newark airport, faces covered with tears, you better believe they get it. It can never be a job, it has to be a passion or it never will work. In the end, the staff, your counselors, can be such a huge influence in a camper’s life. More
As I write this article I am home 6 weeks from camp. What a completely different 6 weeks! 6 weeks without someone laughing next to you at breakfast, 6 weeks without gossiping on the adirondack chairs in the afternoon, and 6 weeks without Lindenmere. I know, I know, it’s my job, and I’m luckier than most, as camp is a part of my everyday life. I’m still there most weekends, and I get to talk to your families and new ones about camp, but it’s not the same! You guys make camp, and I miss you! More
I miss camp tremendously!! It’s been almost two months since camp ended and I am just getting used to being back to my “normal” routine but wishing every day to be back at Lindenmere!! I miss walking around girls camp and seeing all those beautiful smiling faces. More
Color War break out is filled with weeks of anticipation and excitement just waiting to explode at that very second when the packets are thrown and the banners are presented. However this summer, break out was about the fake outs. Yes, we started off with some small smoke bombs outside the dining hall, then one night I told you all to sleep with flashlights by your bed, and some nights I wandered boys and girls camp to stir up some suspicion that something was going on. Before we all knew it, we were packed into the rec hall for the first half of the talent show. While the acts were going on, I spent time walking in and out of the rec hall, and going back stage. I watched the Jr. Camp counselors and campers start to chatter and smile big because they all thought break out was coming. It was time for the last act and out came our division leaders and some circus staff performing a mining act. Each time a banner was hung up, a squeak of excitement and gasp of breath was taken as the banner was read. With each banner campers crept closer and closer to the stage, and alas after an amazing 5 minute skit, it was over, FAKE OUT!!!! Campers and counselors left the rec hall headed to canteen with a hope that at least they still had the firework fake out to look forward to! More

I can’t believe it has only been a month since I arrived back in London fresh from another exciting Lindenmere summer. At camp I never have a sense of time. My Lightning McQueen watch was rarely open – majors slipped into meal times and evening activities seemed to happen at least three times a day. About half way through second session I stopped and thought, “hang on, where has the time gone?” Pre camp and orientation seemed months ago, as did first session. Color War was happening and I could practically smell the turkey legs at Dorney Park. All the head staff agreed that this summer went by faster than any other, which I suppose shows how fun and exciting it really was. Why is it that the year at work and school seems to drag and then the 6 weeks of summer go by in a blink of an eye? Sitting at my desk in a high office building overlooking London I think of all the things I never got to do at Camp this summer. All those people I didn’t fully get to meet and hang out with. All those activities I told myself I would ‘try tomorrow’. All of those fancy salad bar items I said I’d try as part of my [failed] skinny session. Suddenly, whilst I wasn’t looking, time rumbled on and camp ended. More
I recently read that there are some people who go to the arrivals gate in airports to see travelers and their loved ones be reunited. It makes them happy to see people running and hugging each other, to see the impatience of both parties before they can actually be together. They go to see the end of missing someone. I think those people who go to the airport to watch all this need a tip that Camp Lindenmere is actually the best place to see this phenomenon. You can’t help but to have a huge smile plastered across your face when you witness such a thing, and the first official day of camp has a far more concentrated explosion of overwhelming emotion than any old arrivals gate. You know that each enormous bus that pulls up past the baseball field, and the tennis courts, and then the trapeze rigs, is teeming with returning campers, waiting impatiently to see their friends, and the first time campers somehow know that what they are about to experience will be nothing short of incredible. The History of the Circus states that ‘both the strength and weakness of the circus’s attraction lie in its appeal to the unsophisticated’. I’m not sure about that, but I do know that sophistication is not our main goal at the Camp Lindenmere Circus. So what is our goal? The obvious answer is to provide unique skill development, non-competitive and collaborative activity, a non-intimidating arena for performance, an experience for exploring your own physicality with of course safety as the utmost importance.
